Saturday, April 10 – 9:00AM – 1:30PMSession 1: A DEEP EDITING GUIDE TO MAKE YOUR OPENINGS POP
This workshop teaches writers how to make their openings carry page-turning power. We’ll cover:

  • What needs to be included in the first few paragraphs
  • Two promises writers give readers on the first page
  • Deep Editing Techniques
  • 20 Point Checklist for Openings of Every Scene and Chapter

Session 2: THE POWER OF SUBTEXT: FACES AND VOICES
Avoid writing predictable, trite, overused facial expressions and dialogue cues. Learn deep editing tips and techniques for writing them fresh. We’ll cover:

  • Flicker-face emotions
  • Sharing incongruence between expression and dialogue cue
  • How to describe the expression without describing the features
  • Six categories of dialogue cues
  • How to amplify faces and voices when it counts

Session 3: FINESSING BACKSTORY
Learn how to share backstory in smooth keep-the-reader-hooked ways. We’ll cover:

  • The Magic of Misdirection
  • The Top Five Rhetorical Devices for Sharing Backstory
  • Being Strategic with Style and Structure

Session 4: VISCERAL RESPONSES: BEYOND HAMMERING HEARTS
One of the biggest challenges for writers is writing emotion in fresh and credible ways. They may be surprised to see that in an emotionally-driven scene, they kept the POV character in their head, intellectualizing about their emotional experience. Learn Margie’s Top Twelve Visceral Rules and you’ll know how to slip in the right amount of visceral emotion to make your scenes emotionally empowering. You’ll lean how to take a scene from the POV character’s head to the reader’s heart.
